Obituary Condolences

Joseph Mayo PORTSMOUTH - Joseph Mayo, 81, of the 1600 block of Charleston Ave., passed away peacefully April 10, 2011, in Maryview Hospital after a long illness. Joseph was born June 17, 1929 in Portsmouth and attended Portsmouth public schools. He retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in 1986 after 35 years as a supervisor. He was the sixth son of the late Daisy and Hilliard Mayo. He was Past Master of Lebanon Lodge No. 34, Past High Priest - Mount Moriah No. 9, Past Eminent Commander - Antioch No. 7, Alpha & Omega No. 9 - No. 32 degree, Honorary Past Potentate of Arabia Temple No. 12, president of Trustee Board of Arabia Temple No. 12, Trustee of Masonic Lodge, Inc. He was an elected member of I.C. Norcom Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame. He was the proud husband of the late Lillian A. (Bowers) Mayo for 43 years. Survivors include four daughters and one son, Josephine A. Wilkerson of Newport News, Patricia A. Mayo of New Jersey, Alice A. Hudson (Kelvin) of Glen Burnie, Md., Dayna L. Harris of Millersville, Md., and Phillip C. Mayo (JoAnn) of Richmond. He was predeceased by two sisters, Lossie Curry and Florence Blackiemore; and five brothers, Willie, Hilliard, James, John and Charles Mayo; one surviving brother, Henry Mayo of Portsmouth. He has nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, loyal friends and special thank you to his dear friend to the very end, Mr. William Dupree. A wake will be held at 5 p.m. Friday in Corprew Funeral Home, 1822 Portsmouth Blvd. A funeral will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 16, at Third Baptist Church. Memorial donations may be made to the I.C. Norcom Alumni Athletes, P.O. Box 7834, Portsmouth, VA 23704. The family will receive friends at the residence. The body will be taken to the church, Third Baptist Church, 461 Godwin St., Portsmouth, at 11 a.m. Saturday. Corprew Funeral Home is in charge.
