L Michael Urick, 90, of the 5300 block of Susquehanna Dr., passed away on October 6, 2012. He was born in Norfolk to the late Michael and Josephine Urick.
Mike was a Navy 1st Class, Storekeeper aboard the USS Rowell, DE403 from April 1944 to November 1946. He served in the Naval Reserves as a photographer for 20 years. Mike worked as an Electronics Mechanic at the Naval Air Rework Facility from September 1947 to May 10, 1977. He was a member of NARTU where he served as Chaplin. He was a graduate of Holy Trinity High School class of 1940 and was a member of St. Gregory the Great Catholic church where he served as a lector and usher. He was a member of the St. Gregory's Men's Club for many years, was a 4th degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus Fr. Kealy Council #3548 and was a member of the Nocturnal Adoration Society for more than 50 years.
After retiring he was a school bus driver for the Virginia Beach Public Schools and St. Matthew's Catholic School. He most recently was a volunteer for the St. Gregory Food Bank. Mike is survived by his wife, Mary M. Urick; five children, Michael Urick and wife Sheila of CA, Margaret Harrell of Chesapeake, Joseph Urick and wife Jean of LA, Mary Segar and husband George of Virginia Beach and John Urick of Virginia Beach; nine grandchildren, Michael Aaron Urick and wife Dawn, Diana Stankiewicz and husband John, Bryan Harrell, Kimberly Shourds and husband David, Lauren Thompson and husband Jason, Lacey Keating and husband David, Joseph Segar, Christopher Segar and wife Alisabeth, and Tamara Urick; nine great grandchildren Erin, Loghan and Taylor Urick, Robert Neel, Kaleigh Kelly, Emilee Stankiewicz, Gentry and Sawyer Keating, and Savanna Segar; three step great-grandchildren Justin, Jason and Kylee Huber. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Sharon Harrell and son- in-law, Dennis Harrell. He is also survived by his brother Milton J. Urick and wife Laurabelle, his sister Barbara A. Wood and husband Wayne and was predeceased by his sister Hyacinth D. Montgomery.
The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel. A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Princess Anne Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the
