Hampton - Elizabeth "Jean" Scott Long, 78, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, October 20, 2012. Born in Clarksburg, WV on July 23, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Earnest Wayne Scott and Clara Reed Scott. She graduated from the St. Mary's Hospital School of Nursing in 1959 and worked her entire career as an operating nurse in West Virginia as well as at Dixie Hospital, Hampton General Hospital and Riverside Hospital. She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church.
Jean was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes at age 2 and her doctors tried an experimental new drug called insulin. It was her profound wish not to die from diabetes, and she even survived breast cancer, but it was ultimately not the diabetes which took her life.
Preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Capt. Franklin Pierce Long, II, her daughter, Elizabeth Reed Doneson, and her granddaughter, Marybeth Doneson; survivors include her son, George Warren Long; her sister, Shirley Perry and her husband, Cecil E. Perry, Jr.; her adopted son, Peter Robles; her nieces, Kimberly Martin of Colorado, and Shirley Coakley and Shannon Schrader both of Virginia Beach; and grand-nieces and grand-nephews, CC and Taylor Casey, Dana and Casey Martin, and Perry Scott Schrader.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at St. John's Cemetery by The Reverend Anna Noon. The family will receive friends at home Tuesday from 6-8pm.
