Obituary Condolences

Rev. James Davenport
Manteo - The Rev. James H. Davenport, 93, of Manteo, went to be with his Lord on Sunday, December 30, 2012. Born on April 15, 1919 in Elizabeth City, NC, he was the son of the late Herbert Glenmore and Elizabeth Reid Davenport.

Following high school in Elizabeth City, he enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard, retiring in 1960 as Senior Chief Yeoman. Called to the ministry, Rev. Davenport attended Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, graduating in 1962.

He served as pastor of Northwest Baptist Church, Chesapeake, VA, Eureka Baptist Church, Corapeake, NC, and Manteo Baptist Church, Manteo, NC retiring in 1984. After retirement he served as interim pastor at Warwick Swamp Baptist Church, Tyner, NC and Engelhard Baptist Church, Engelhard, NC. In May 2005, Manteo Baptist Church named him Pastor Emeritus.

During his ministry he served as Clerk and Moderator of the Chowan Baptist Association and as a member of the General Board of the NC State Convention.

Rev. Davenport is survived by his wife of 53 years, Margaret (Peggy) Davenport of the home; a daughter, Linda D. Jones and husband, Ron of Mechanicsville, VA; two sons, Don L. Davenport and wife, Marcia of Corpus Christi, TX and Michael D. Davenport and wife, Tammy of Sissonville, WV. He also has five grandchildren, James D. Davenport and wife, Diana of Corpus Christi, TX, Stephen C. Jones and wife, Laina of Virginia Beach, VA, Rev. Patrick R. Jones and wife, Katie of Conway, SC, Andrea J. Richardson and husband, Jason of Mechanicsville, VA, and Julie D. Stephens and husband, Mark of Nacogdoches, TX; and 12 great grandchildren.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Emilie Sawyer Davenport and three brothers, Edward V. Davenport, Thomas R. Davenport, and Herbert G. Davenport all of Elizabeth City.

The Rev. Davenport will be remembered as a kind and loving husband, father, and friend by all who knew him over the years. He will be greatly missed and never out of our thoughts and memories.

A celebration of life will be held at Manteo Baptist Church on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 1:00 PM with the Rev. Ken Simpson and his grandson, the Rev. Patrick Jones officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Roanoke Island Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends and relatives at Twiford Funeral Home, Manteo on Friday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM.
