Lillian C. Edwards
Portsmouth - Lillian C. Edwards, 94, died January 13, 2013. Lil was born October 20, 1918 in Portsmouth and she was the daughter of the late Willie Asa and Minnie Moore Creech. She was predeceased by her husband, James Woodrow Edwards, Sr.; her youngest son, James "Woody" Woodrow Edwards II; a grandson, Thomas A. Edwards, Jr.; and two brothers, Willie Lee and Edward Moore.
Lil was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and Norfolk Business School. She was a very active lifetime member of Broad St. United Methodist Church and the Jessie Hancock Sunday School Class. She loved making school bags for the Church Charity - making hundreds over the years. She also taught the children's Sunday School class for many years. Anyone who knew Lil knows she loved nothing better than to cut her grass and she did so right on through this past summer.
Lil is survived by her son, Thomas Asa Edwards, Sr. and his wife Cyndi; her grandchildren, Curtis T. Edwards, Tammy L. Edwards, and James W. "Trey" Edwards III; her seven great-grandchildren; her sister, Teeny Stafford; and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to offer a special thanks to Joanna Lane and Cindy Davis for their care and friendship to Lil in these last few months.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday, January 16, at 12 Noon at Oak Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth by the Rev. Lisa Blackmonson. The family will receive friends at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel Tuesday from 7-8:30 p.m. and at 3011 Woodrow St. (Lil's home) following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Broad St. United Methodist Church, 300 Broad St., Portsmouth, VA 23707.
