Henry L. Stevenson, Sr.
Portsmouth - Henry L. "Barney" Stevenson, Sr., peacefully slipped into eternal rest early in the morning on Thursday, January 17, 2013. He was born May 15, 1948 in Portsmouth, VA, the son of Constance E. Stevenson (Jean Dessaw) and the late Alphonso E. Stevenson, Jr. He was a longtime member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, Portsmouth. He was a proud 1968 graduate of I.C. Norcom High School in Portsmouth and a 1979 graduate of Norfolk State College (University). He was a United States Air Force veteran and served a tour of duty in Vietnam. He was employed at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, VA for over 35 years. He was an active and devoted member of the I.C. Norcom High School Alumni Association, having served as president, vice-president and a committee chair for many years. At the time of his death, he was the Assistant Men's Varsity Basketball coach at Norcom High School. As team captain, he led the Greyhounds to a state men's basketball championship in 1968. He was also a director of the Churchland Basketball Association working with youth ages 6 to 15 years old. For many years, he also was a member of the Senior Softball League having played for over 30 years. He volunteered countless hours for various sports organizations in the Hampton Roads area serving youth participating in recreational activities.
He was predeceased by his father Alphonso E. (Johnny) Stevenson, Jr., and his brother Alphonso E. Stevenson, III.
Left to cherish Barney's memory are his loving wife Hedy L. Stevenson, of Portsmouth, VA and a devoted son Henry L. "BJ" Stevenson, Jr., of Richmond, VA; his mother Constance E. Stevenson (Jean Dessaw), Philadelphia, PA, (formerly of Portsmouth, VA); seven surviving siblings Christopher A. Stevenson, Baltimore, MD; Anthony C. Stevenson (Veronica), Portsmouth, VA; Andre L. Stevenson (Claudette), North Brunswick, NJ; Sherita Y. Cotton and Pennie C. Stevenson, both of Philadelphia, PA; Pamela C. Kirby, East Orange, NJ; Constance J. Burke (Michael), Arlington, TX; one aunt Gayle Dessaw, Somerset, NJ; a sister-in-law Valdena Johnson-Shaw, Winston-Salem, NC; one godson Jason R. Hinton, Virginia Beach, VA; and a host of other relatives, lifelong friends, co-workers, and neighbors who love and miss him. For many years, Barney devoted his time, talents and resources mentoring students and encouraging them to succeed. He holds a special place in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 23 at Willett Hall, 3701 Willett Drive in Portsmouth with Dr. E.T. Knight presiding. Public viewings will be held on Tuesday, January 22 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, 3310 Deep Creek Blvd. in Portsmouth, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Corprew Funeral Home, 1822 Portsmouth Blvd in Portsmouth, and on Wednesday, January 23 from 9 am to 11 am at Willett Hall. Corprew Funeral Home is in charge.
