Marshall Topping Bohannon Jr.
Chesapeake - Marshall Topping Bohannon Jr. (Toppy) passed away on Thursday, March 14, 2013 at the Chesapeake Healthcare Center, where he was recuperating from surgery. He has resided at Allzwell Assisted Living in Chesapeake with his wife, Connie, since 2008. Before that they lived in both Norfolk and Sandbridge. Toppy was born in Norfolk on August 22, 1930, the older son of the late Marshall Topping Bohannon, Sr. and the late Grace Bargamin Bohannon. Toppy graduated from the University of Virginia, where he was a member of the Raven Society and earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from the University of Virginia School of Law. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Constance Page Bohannon (Connie). Toppy earned an officer's commission in the United States Navy JAG Corps and served two years active duty in Japan, where their daughter Constance Page Bohannon(Page) was born on July 5, 1956. Page preceded him in death on March 11, 2008 at the age of 51. He is survived by his son, Marshall Topping Bohannon, III and his wife, Elizabeth Hehir Bohannon and their three sons Ryan Marshall Bohannon (18), Warren Patrick Bohannon (15) and Trevor Jefferson Bohannon (10), all of La Canada Flintridge, California. Toppy remained a member of the US Navy Reserves and retired at the rank of Captain. He practiced law in Norfolk for 50 years and was qualified to practice before the Virginia and United States Supreme Courts. He was a member of the Pyramid Club and Kiwanis Club in Norfolk, Virginia, and the Virginia Beach United Methodist Church. In 1982 he was a Republican Party nominee to the Virginia House of Delegates. Toppy was an avid and passionate opera lover and supporter. He served as President of the Virginia Opera Guild, appeared as a supernumerary in several Virginia Opera productions and proudly posed for a photo with Luciano Pavarotti on October 2, 1980, before a performance at Chrysler Hall. Toppy is also survived by his younger brother, Robert LaPointe Bohannon and his wife, Ann, and their two daughters, Grace Leigh Marshall and Catherine LaPointe Silberberg, son-in-law Ed Irby, granddaughter, Maggie Page Irby Freshman and husband, Jake, of Charlottesville, Virginia, and grandson Walter Elliott Irby and wife Gretchen, of Olney, Maryland. Maggie and Jake are expecting Connie and Toppy's first great-grandsons and Walt and Gretchen their first great-granddaughter later this spring. There will be a Memorial Service open to all on Friday, March 22, at 2 p.m. at Nimmo United Methodist Church, 2200 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach, VA, with a reception immediately following at the church.
