Chesapeake - On Tuesday afternoon, June 4, 2013, God called one of His soldiers, Floyd E. Fitchett Sr. from labor to reward.
He was born May 9, 1923, the third son of the late Charlie Samuel Fitchett and Addie Jordan Fitchett. He was married to the late Dannie T. Fitchett. He was predeceased by three brothers, Vernon Lee, Melvin and Clarence Nathaniel Fitchett; two sisters, Bernice Williams and Ophelia Williams.
Floyd was educated in Norfolk County Public Schools and graduated from Norfolk State College. He was then called into the Armed Forces, served his time and was honorably discharged. He came home and enrolled in McAllister School of Mortuary Science.
He worked hard, graduated top of his class and joined his father as a licensed embalmer and funeral director in the operation of Fitchett Funeral Home, Inc. Together, they built the beautiful building that now stands at 1821 E. Liberty Street., Chesapeake, VA. Upon the demise of his father, he operated the business with his brother, Clarence Nathaniel, also a licensed embalmer and funeral director. When his brother passed, he became sole owner of Fitchett Funeral Home and continued to serve the families of the community for over 60 years until his retirement.
He was a member of Joshua Lodge #66 and Norfolk Funeral Directors and Embalmers Association-where he previously served as President. He was one of the areas most well known and respected morticians.
Left to cherish his memories are his sister, Beatrice Harrell; his children, Floyd E. Fitchett Jr. and wife Phyllis, who worked faithfully by Mr. Fitchett's side as the secretary of the funeral home for over 40 years, Brenda Fitchett Anthony and husband Malcolm and Patricia Fitchett Baker and husband Larry; his grandsons, Lloyd Curtis Futrell Jr. and Brian Adams; granddaughters, Danielle Fitchett-Mann, who faithfully carried on the family business when her grandfather got sick, Shante Fitchett, who was her grandfather's devoted caregiver, Jameelah Futrell, Dominique Fitchett, Sharnice Anthony and Lesha Anthony; several great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
