George Washington Stone Jr.|
Virginia Beach - George W. "Stony" Stone Jr. went home to our Lord on July 11, 2013. He was born in Norfolk, Va. on June 3, 1927 to the late George W. Stone Sr. and Helen Clemmer Stone. He was preceded in death by his brother Harry Clemmer Stone, his first wife, Dorothy Wheeler Stone and daughter-in-law, Vicky Lee Stone.
After a lifetime of service, he retired in 1989 as Deputy Chief of Operations for the Norfolk Fire Department. He was a Mason and Past Master of Norfolk Lodge #1, Past Worthy Patron of the Elizabeth Chapter of the Eastern Star and past member of the Khedive Temple Motor Patrol and Tall Cedars of Lebanon. Stony was an avid golfer and fabulous dancer. He had many interests and enjoyed travel, photography, wood working, attending ODU Monarch football games and a good joke.
During World War II, and at a young age, he joined the Merchant Marines and went on to serve in the 82nd Airborne division of the U.S. Army.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Betty Jean Stone, sister Lorraine Joyner, and children; Holly Stone Longtin and husband Mike, Helen "Mia" Stone Adams and husband Daniel of Virginia Beach, George David Stone of Big Lake, Alaska and Michael Thomas Stone and wife Pamela of Hertford, N.C. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews.
