Elizabeth C. Parkman
Norfolk - Elizabeth "Betty" Coyne Parkman passed away Saturday, August 24, 2013 surrounded by family.
Born March 7, 1927 in Gloucester, Massachusetts, she was predeceased by her father Thomas F. Coyne, Lt. Commander, US Navy Retired and her mother Bertha Coyne.
She graduated from Granby High School and Madison State Teachers College (now James Madison University) in Harrisonburg, Virginia. After graduation, she taught school in Maryland before going to Europe in 1954 as an elementary teacher for the Department of the Army oversees dependent school system and rose to the position of Principal. While there, she met Edward L. Parkman, a US Army Captain.
During the next 11 years she followed her husband to duty stations in Ethiopia, Northern Virginia, and Hawaii, where she and Ed raised their three sons. When Ed retired in 1968 they settled in Norfolk where they have lived ever since. She always stated that "Norfolk is where I want to grow old".
She was active in the Bay View Elementary and Norview High School PTA's. She also served as President of the Norfolk Council of PTA's and spent 6 years as an appointed member of the Norfolk School board. Betty will always be remembered for her consuming interest in the public education system and the need for all children to be educated in order to be productive and responsible citizens.
She is survived by her loving husband of 55 years Edward L. Parkman, LTC USA (retired), and her 3 sons and their spouses; James and his wife Dianna of Norfolk, their children Lindsey, Nikki and Skylar; John and his wife Sheila of Chesapeake, and their children Kaitlyn and Zachary; and Michael and his wife Juliet of Virginia Beach, and their children Kelly and Grant.
Visitation with family and friends will be held on Tuesday, August 27 from 6 to 8 p.m. and a memorial service will be held on Wednesday, August 28 at 2 p.m., both at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, Norfolk, Virginia, followed by graveside service at Forest Lawn Cemetery on Granby Street in Norfolk.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the in her name.
