Norfolk - Louise Winstead Gurganus passed away at Harbor's Edge on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013.
She was born in Rocky Mount, NC on March 26, 1929 and moved with her family to Norfolk, VA in 1956.
She was predeceased by her parents Cecil Gray Winstead and Neva Putnam Levine, her husband Charlie Thomas "Tom" Gurganus, Jr., her sister Myriam Winstead, her son Charlie Thomas "Tommy" Gurganus, III and a son-in-law Patrick James Callahan.
She was a professional bookkeeper for Big A Auto Supply until her retirement, after which she was the Financial Secretary at Second Presbyterian Church until her recent second retirement.
She was a long-time member of Park Place Baptist Church where she was very involved and held various positions including the Church Treasurer as well as Director of the Women's Missionary Union. She also enjoyed participating in the choir. She was blessed to have many close friends, most of them from Park Place Baptist Church and one of her favorite things to do was to go to lunch with her friends after church.
She leaves behind daughters Brenda Gurganus Hardee (Robert) and Carolyn Gurganus Callahan, grandchildren Kristin Hardee Poulin (Eric), Leah Gurganus, Brian Callahan (Heather) and Ashley Hardee as well as great-grandchildren Gaetan, Neva and Lisette Poulin and Kaila and Liam Callahan.
She also leaves behind sister Rachel Winstead Becka (Joe), brothers Cecil G. Winstead (Sharon), Glenn Winstead (Mary) and Payten Winstead (Chrissy) as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Joe and Rachel Becka, the extended Winstead family and close cousin George Putnam and wife Barbara for their generosity, love and support.
There will be a viewing on Wednesday, Sept. 18, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Dr. Chapel, Norfolk, VA. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, Sept. 19, at 1:30 p.m. at Second Presbyterian Church, 7305 Hampton Blvd., Norfolk, VA with burial at Forest Lawn Cemetery. The Rev. Billy Ricketts will be officiating at the service.
