Norfolk - On September 21, 2013, God summoned his servant Rev. Roy Chester Moody to come home. He was born March 2nd, 1935 to the late George E. and Daisy Y. Moody in Skippers, VA. He received his early education in the Portsmouth School System and later he pursued his interest in baseball and eventually played for the Indianapolis Clowns of the Negro Leagues. It was after his move to New York that Chester began an extensive acting career that spanned from New York City to Europe. He became a member of the League of Broadway Producers and Managers in Manhattan. He directed his own acting troupe with over 40 productions to his credit; he also served as an artistic director for the police athletic league and the Harlem School of the Arts. Next to God first, then family, the love of his life was theater. After returning to Portsmouth, he continued his work in the theater as an assistant to Dr. Murray in Theater Arts of Norfolk State University for 13 yrs. Chester became a minister and was an active member of the Garden of Prayer until his recent illness. Rev. Moody is survived by two brothers, George Moody of Chesapeake and Jerome Moody of Portsmouth; three sister Barbara Cure of Manchester, NJ, Daisy Lee (Russell) of Norfolk, Veronica Johnson of Portsmouth and a host of nieces , nephews and cousins to cherish his memory. A wake service will be held on Thursday, Sept. 26 from 6 to 8 p.m., Metropolitan Funeral Service, 5605 Portsmouth Blvd. A celebration of life will be held on Friday, Sept. 27 at 12 noon at the Garden of Prayer Worship Center, 1001 Church Street, Norfolk.
