Richard Ruddick Jr
Norfolk - Richard Mahone "Dick" Ruddick, Jr., age 60, of Myrtle Beach, SC, passed away on October 12, 2013 at National Health Care in Garden City, SC following a long battle with early onset Alzheimer's.
Dick was born on May 11, 1953 in Norfolk, VA. He graduated from William Fleming High School in Roanoke in 1971 and from Randolph Macon College in Ashland, VA in 1975 where he received a B.S. with honors in mathematics. He started his career as a computer programmer with The Computer Company of Richmond, VA and ended it with Marriott International in Bethesda, MD.
Dick was a dear and generous soul, a loving and devoted husband, and a faithful friend. He was a good-natured cynic with a keen sense of humor and a history buff who particularly enjoyed discussing The War Between States. He was an avid chess player and looked forward to a match with his good friend, Bernie Mann. Dick also loved having a philosophical chat while puffing a cigar with his lifelong friend, Courtney Carlson.
Preceding him in death are his mother, Hortense Winston Ruddick, father, Richard Mahone Ruddick, Sr., brother, Clyde Adelbert Smith, maternal grandparents, Hartwell "Fats" Winston and Vadie Powers Winston, and paternal grandparents, Robert Shelburne and Naomi Atkinson Ruddick.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Brenda Hyre Ruddick of Myrtle Beach; brother, Winston Adair Smith (Jacqueline) of Chesapeake, VA; nieces, Derinda Smith Bunch (George Ray II) of Virginia Beach, VA, Melissa Smith Oliver (Steven) of Chesapeake, VA; numerous great nieces and great nephews, step mother-in-law Becky Hyre of Myrtle Beach; and three godchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, November 2, 2013 at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Murrells Inlet, SC
