Virginia Beach - Gwen Sartwell Weaver passed away on September 19. 2013 after a long illness. Born on July 22, 1950 in Washington DC, Gwen grew up in Kensington MD where she was a record setting member of the Pleasantview Swim Team. After graduating from Walter Johnson High School , Gwen received her BFA from the University of MD. From childhood Gwen showed her creativity in every area of her life, from sewing her own clothes, to her painting, drawing, needlework and her "lettering". Armed with experience in the drafting department of a manufacturing company, Gwen opened her Studio G Calligraphy in Virginia Beach, offering fine hand lettering, specializing in delicate pointed pen work, weddings, invitations and diplomas for over 30 years. Her works of art featuring her calligraphy were exhibited in many juried shows including the Washington Post Office, the National Cathedral and Strathmore Hall. Gwen was a much loved calligraphy teacher who taught with gentleness, humor, patience and professionalism. Her "Weaver Writing" hand has become a favorite of innumerable calligraphers and her legacy in the world of calligraphy is rich. In addition to calligraphy, Gwen loved basking in the sun, reading, creating intricate origami pieces, working jigsaw puzzles, playing card games (especially Uno), word games, gardening, traveling, watching the wildlife outside her window, and studying any aspect of ancient Egyptian life (including reading hieroglyphs).

Gwen's husband, William C. (Bill) Weaver passed away on May 22, 2013 after a lengthy illness. She was also predeceased by her parents, Wilbur M. (Bill) Sartwell and Patricia Montee Sartwell and her brother, Gary Sartwell. Gwen is survived by sister Gail (Tom) Walker and brother, Greg Sartwell, nieces Jaime, Michelle, Wendy and Alyx, nephews Corey, Garrett and Cody, great nieces Kylin, Caitlyn, Jordan and Peyton, great nephews Ryan and Christian, stepdaughter, Robin Summerfruit Weaver and stepson, Willam C. Weaver Jr.

Funeral service and interment will be Saturday, November 2, at 2 p.m. at Holy Ghost Church Cemetery in Issue, MD with Father Greg Coan officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Second Chance Wildlife Center, 7101 Barcellona Drive, Gaithersburg, MD 20879
