Portsmouth - Hobert Larry Austin, Jr., affectionately known as "Poncho" departed this life,with peace October 30, 2013 in Hampton, Virginia. Poncho was the son of Hobert Larry Austin, Sr. and his mother Betty Jean Austin who preceded him in death. He was educated in Portsmouth, Virginia and was a graduate of Manor High School, Class of 1975.
He left the area to serve in the United States Army. After his service, he spent many years with the Southeastern Water Treatment Facility in Suffolk and the Water Treatment Facility in Cleveland, Ohio. He continued his education and was currently attending Everest College, Chesapeake, VA. Poncho had a passion for music and sang with a local band, Weekend Affair. He used his voice wherever it could be heard, but loved singing for the Lord and is remembered fondly for the joyful sound he brought as a member, minister of music and instrumentalist for the Full Gospel Evangelistic Center in Cleveland and many of our local area churches.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his father Hobert Larry Austin, Sr., a daughter Rosalyn Summey, a son Hobert Larry Austin,III, his loving sisters, Angela Baker, Carmen Wilson, Damita Lewis, Rita Robinson, four grandchildren, stepchildren, and a host of beloved aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins friends and neighbors. He also leaves to mourn his passing the motorcycle club N-DEEP of Cleveland Ohio and Hampton Roads Virginia of which he was a Founder and one time President.
His presence will be missed but his uplifting love and spirit will forever be remembered. We celebrate that Poncho is with his mother and Our Lord. Services are 12 Noon Thursday November 8, at St. John Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Albert G. Horton Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk, VA. Visitation will begin Wednesday at Fisher Funeral Home, 1520 Effingham Street, Portsmouth, VA .
