Obituary Condolences

Henry Clyde Benton Jr.

Norfolk - Henry Clyde Benton Jr., 73, of Norfolk, died Monday, November 18, 2013, after enduring the long, arduous road that is Alzheimer's. Born in Washington, NC, he was the only child of the late Henry Clyde Benton, Sr. and Mary Louise Whidbee Benton. Though he grew up in various places and parts of the country, he always considered himself to be from Newport News, V.A. He attended Warwick High School, graduated from Christchurch School, and obtained his B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he was an extremely proud and active member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity.

An avid, intensely passionate Carolina Tarheel fan, Clyde may best be remembered as a man alive with enthusiasm and excitement about all that was important to him, the Heels being third only to his family and God. He gave his energy to every child and young person with whom he came into contact and lavished attention on all those whom he loved. He was happiest on the dance floor, at the Dean Dome, or the sidelines of a favorite young person's sporting event. For work, he spent a good part of his career traveling the country in various investment sales positions, but he most enjoyed his stint rehabbing old houses right here in Norfolk. An active participant in the churches of which he was a member, including Christ and St. Luke's, Good Shepard, and most recently Christ the Redeemer, he contributed hours of his time to the youth programs and volunteered tirelessly for the homeless. Clyde gave of his time to various local political campaigns and civic efforts; a great joy was contributing his service as President of the West Ghent Civic League.

Clyde is survived by his wife of 50 years, Betsy Fitch Benton, originally of Chapel Hill, N.C.; two daughters: Dawn Kimberlee Benton White and husband Brice of New Paltz, N.Y., and Holly Benton and husband Frank Bozzo of Durham, N.C.; nine grandchildren: Sarah White Ortiz (David) and Rachael, Nathanael, Josiah, Rebekah, Mary, Gabriel and Anna White, and Ben Bozzo; great-grandchildren, Dominic and Blaise Ortiz; and nephews Miles, David, Brad and John Fitch and Brooks Walker, and niece, Hunter Walker.

A memorial service and reception will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, November 24 at Knox Presbyterian Church, 427 W. 37th Ave. in Norfolk. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the , Southeastern Virginia, 6350 Center Drive, Suite 102, Norfolk, VA. 23502 or Christ the Redeemer Church, 427 W. 37th St., Norfolk, VA 23508.
