Freer Gray Kiger, III

Norfolk - Freer Gray Kiger, III, 19, passed away February 10, 2017. A native of Norfolk, Virginia, he was the son of Freer Gray and Diane Kiger, Jr. Gray was a student at Old Dominion University where he was a member of O.D.U.'s Sailing Team. Gray was an avid sailor and his proudest accomplishments include 3rd Place at the International Sailing Competition at Buzzards Bay and the National Radial Laser Championships in 2014 and 2015.

He is survived by his parents and siblings, Shelloy Ranhorn, Nicole Kiger, Lauren Kiger, Amanda and Jordan Thompson, Kathleen and Aaron Van Allen, and his nephews and nieces, Bentley, Martin, and Camryn Dudek, Sadie Ranhorn, Lincoln and Johnny Baker March, and Alice Malgee.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at the First Presbyterian Church of Norfolk. A reception will follow at Norfolk Yacht and Country Club. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Old Dominion Athletic Foundation Sailing Program, 4417 Monarch Way, 4th floor, Norfolk VA 23529. H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel is handling arrangements. Online condolences may be offered to the family at hdoliver.com.

The news of Gray's death has effected his extended family very profoundly. We got to know a little bit about this beautiful young man in September, 2016 when, at the family reunion, his proud Mom told us the sweetest stories about him and his siblings. Her face was alight with joy when she talked about her remarkable children and, may I say, particularly Gray. Our hearts and prayers are with you all, and just know that we love you very much.

I'm sitting at a bar having drinks,
and all I can think of is how life really stinks.

Been a week to the day that your son passed away,
Why won't these horrible thoughts go away.

By the quirk of being neighbors next door,
Your family was one that my Granny and Mom adored.

It has been years since I've seen your son,
My Grandmother and Mom had passed and I consider our relationship done.

But now the thoughts of your son, my granny and mom have intertwined,
This is a situation that memories won't allow to be rewind.

I want to thank your family for all the Christmas Eve invites,
Really raised my family's social agenda to new heights.

Your friendship and love made Granny and Mom so happy,
I was just there for the free drinks and don't mean to sound so sappy.

But now that I'm older and more mature,
I'll regret the times that I was such a bore.

I do not have the ability to articulate words to alleviate your pain,
But the spirit of his presence will always remain.

I will always have anguish over what happen to your son,
But this sad event will remind me that my Granny and Mom consider your family's friendship number one.

when Sharon called me and told me off this sweet boys loss I was so shocked my heart droped and knew I had to call my girls we are so very sorry for your loss no words can help but I hope you and your family know that he is up their with granddaughters and he will always be with you and he will be sorry missed to all that knew and lived him . I never meant him but I am quite sure that he was truly a bright young man all of our prayers are with you in this day. god be with this family in this day and guide through as the go through this day and the days ahead. all are love to you and your family gail , don, anna, and trish
