Berta Lou Riegel

Berta Lou Riegel, 84, of Greeley, Colo., died on Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013, at Bonell Good Samaritan Society in Greeley.
Born on Aug. 14, 1929, to Roy Lee and Geraldine (Meinkoff) Whitaker, in Pawhuska, Okla., she grew up and attended school in Stafford, Kans., where her father worked in the oil field. She married Marine William H. (Bill) Riegel at Camp LeJeune, N.C., on June 10, 1948. They were married for 57 years. After Bill's left the Marines, they moved to Great Bend, Kans., and then to Eaton, Colo. She was a homemaker who also had several retail sales jobs, where she got to meet and assist customers. In 1982, she enrolled in Aimes College to take business classes. She had a perfect grade-point average and then went to work for Job Corps. She was part of the Assembly of God Church, where she was always part of the choir and sang many solos. She also played an instrument and sang in the senior band from Evans, Colo.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William (Bill); brother, Bill Whitaker of Grand Island, Neb.; and grandson, B.J. Ballhorst of Smith Center, Kans.
She is survived by her daughter, Gayle (John) Ballhorst of Smith Center; son, William H. (Janice) Riegel II of Eaton; grandchildren, Blake Ballhorst of Junction City, Kans., Jessica (Matt) Beaver of Orlando, Fla., Christina (Patrick) Frye of Larkspur, Colo., and Teleah Riegel of Eaton; and great-grandchildren, Thomas and Olivia Beaver of Orlando.
