Reader, Evelyn - Bartonville
BARTONVILLE - Evelyn M. Reader, age 95, of Bartonville died at 6:04 p.m. Thursday, March 26, 2015, at Apostolic Christian Restmor in Morton surrounded by her family. We know she is having a wonderful time with Dad, Abby, and Snuggles and everyone else she has missed. She probably feels so good, she's mowing grass! She was born Dec. 5, 1919, in Texas to Will and Freda Schulz. Her family moved to Illinois following the Great Dust Bowl in Texas. She met Wilbur Reader, who, along with the rest of the Reader brothers, were excited to meet the Texas girls. They were married July 26, 1941, in St. Louis and he preceded her in death on May 17, 1990. In addition to Wilbur, Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; sister Jessie "Jake"; brothers Albert "Red", John, an infant brother, and granddogs Abby and "My Puppy" Snuggles. Evelyn is survived by two daughters, Juanita Reader of Bartonville and Bernice (Jim) McKinney of Austin, Texas; and granddog Mailee. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Delores "Toby" Bohm, Blanche Ohrn, Wilma Jost, May Reader and Dorothy Reader; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Evelyn was very active as room mother and Brownie and Girl Scout leader when Juanita and Bernice were young. She retired from Limestone Community High School after Wilbur retired and they enjoyed going to the dog and horse races and traveling, especially to Las Vegas. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed having big family holiday celebrations. She was an awesome seamstress and enjoyed crocheting and embroidery. She shared her creative talents with anyone that needed help, including wallpapering, tiling, and painting. She was a member of East Peoria First United Methodist Church, where she enjoyed being a very active member of the Prayer Shawl ministry. She loved dogs and hummingbirds. She was very independent. She loved her family and would do anything for them and was cherished by everyone. The family would like to thank the staff at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center for the wonderful care she received the last three months, and the caring staff at Apostolic Christian Restmor the last three weeks, along with family and friends. Services will be at 2 p.m. today, March 29, at Davison-Fulton Bartonville Chapel in Bartonville, with visitation one hour prior to service. The Rev. Mary Arnold will officiate. Burial will follow at Maple Ridge Cemetery in Mapleton. Memorials may be made to East Peoria First United Methodist Church. Ross, Mark - Peoria
PEORIA - Mark Ross, 61, Lake Keowee, S.C., formerly of Peoria, passed away peacefully early in the morning on Sunday, March 22, 2015, at home on Lake Keowee in South Carolina. Mark was born in Pennsylvania and grew up in Brecksville, Ohio. He earned his B.S. in mechanical engineering from the University of Akron in 1976. He joined Caterpillar Inc. as a co-op engineer in 1973 and was hired into the chemical products division after graduation. He quickly became an expert in rubber and plastics technologies and was the first non-metallic liaison engineer, consulting with engineers worldwide. He also became an expert in high-pressure hydraulic hoses as a marketing engineer. He retired in 2009 after a 35-year career with Caterpillar. He is survived by his wife, Maribeth (Schachtrup) Ross; two brothers, Thomas Ross of Coshocton, Ohio, and Larry Ross of Pittsburg, Pa.; two stepsons, Jeffrey Rule of Brimfield, Ill., and Gregory Rule of Washougal, Wash.; along with two grandchildren, Ben and Jilly. He was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore and Jeanne Ross of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and his brother, Ted of Carmel, Calif. A perfect day for Mark would include a ride across Lake Keowee and at least 18 holes of golf. It wasn't just the game but the competition, the camaraderie and "after-golf" that captured his heart and soul. Having fun on the golf course was just as important to him as the game. In 1983, he founded the Scratch 'n Sniff Golf League in Peoria. The league is still going strong in its 33rd year, primarily due to his philosophy of having fun on the course. In retirement, Mark and Maribeth combined their love of golf with lake living at Cliffs' Community in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of South Carolina. He quickly took top honors as the first Club Champion at Keowee Springs in 2011 and successfully defended his title in 2012. His legacy will live on as the Springs' Club Championship Trophy going forward will be named in his honor. It is the gusto with which Mark lived, laughed and loved that will be remembered most. His smile will be forever imbedded in the hearts of all of us who knew and loved him. His was a smile that would light up a room; and yet he made one feel like it was intended "just for you." He was a true friend and gentleman in so many ways. His smile and kindness will live on in our hearts forever. Friends are invited to share in a celebration of Mark's life on Monday, March 30, 2015, at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Peoria Heights, Ill. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m., followed by the memorial Mass at 11 a.m. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in West Peoria. Wright & Salmon Mortuary is handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations in memory of Mark Ross to the Research Foundation for Appendiceal Cancer through NORD - National Organization for Rare Disorders. Donations may be made at raredisease.org . Please request that donor/gift information be sent to Maribeth at rossme12@att.net or her home address, 134 Bright Water Trail, Six Mile, SC 29682. Heartfelt thanks to Hospice of the Foothills and our neighbors who warmly wrapped their arms around Mark and Maribeth in Mark's final months. For all those who work with Hospice, you are truly amazing and we are grateful to have you. Donations in Mark's honor may also be made to Hospice of Foothills, 390 Keowee School Road, Seneca, SC 29672.
