Berlin, Emma
EL PASO - Emma Augusta Elizabeth Berlin, 85, of El Paso passed away and was welcomed by her Lord to Heaven on Friday, Jan. 23, 2015, at her home, with family by her side. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Richard I. Berlin; her parents, Hjalmar and Mary (nee Johnson) Hallberg; three brothers, Gustavo, Perry and Ed Hallberg; sisters, Esther Stange and Clara Dennison; and grandchild, Jason Berlin. She leaves her four children, Eileen (Jim Boyle) Berlin of Waterloo, Ill., Marlene (David Leckrone) Berlin of Silver Springs, Md., Richard (Jan) Berlin of El Paso and Dennis (Shannon Gauthier) Berlin of El Paso; three grandchildren, Jennifer (Matt) Jones of Normal, Keith (Erin) Berlin of Bloomington and Elizabeth Boyle of Waterloo; and four great-grandchildren, Taylor and Ethan Jones and Owen and Summer Berlin. Emma was born July 31, 1929, on a Wisconsin farm and went to grade school in a one-room school house. The entire area was flooded to become a lake and the family moved to Chicago, where Emma attended high school and met a dear friend for life, Eileen Toepke. Upon graduation, she worked in Chicago for two years until she met and married the love of her life, Richard Berlin. They eventually settled back in Richard's hometown of Princeton, Ill.,, where Eileen, Marlene and Rich were born. Emma was an avid bridge card player in Princeton and hosted many a group. After nine years, Emma and Richard relocated to El Paso, Ill.,, after which Dennis was born to the couple and they made their home for 50-plus years. Emma loved to spend time with her grandchildren. She was active in her church and was a Brownie Scout leader for her daughters. She worked at the El Paso Telephone Company and then in the Woodford County Assessor's Office in the Eureka Court House, from which she retired. Emma will be remembered by her family as being able to whip up wonderful meals without the use of recipes, even when camping, marvelous pies and homemade cookies, almost always in the cookie jar. She had a giving heart and opened her home for a year to Carolyn Cousins, a foreign exchange student. Her faith in God and her Lord and Savior Jesus was her rock in life. Emma always said her greatest accomplishment in life was raising four children, and what brought her the most joy was her family. She always had time to wipe a tear, listen to a story or make someone's day extra special. She leaves many dear friends she made in El Paso and is being greeted by several who are welcoming her in heaven. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Ruestman-Harris Funeral Home in El Paso. A private service for the family will be held Saturday, Jan. 31, 2015, at Grace Fellowship in El Paso. The Rev. Tim Huckins will officiate. Burial will be in the El Paso Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Grace Fellowship in El Paso.
