Painter, Donald - Germantown Hills  
LEWISTOWN - Donald I. Painter, 83, of Lewistown, formerly of Peoria, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2015, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria. He was born on March 8, 1932, in Henderson County, Ill., the son of the late Irven and Vera L. Elston Painter. He married Joanne E. Woodside on May 15, 1953, in Disco, Ill. Surviving are his wife and six children, Leslie I. Painter of North Dakota, Duane L. (Suzanne) Painter of Conroe, Texas, Marie E. Painter of Katy, Texas, Alan J. (Penny) Painter of Bolingbrook, Ill., Daniel E. (Donna) Painter of Marquette Heights, Ill. and James D. Painter of Katy, Texas. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, as well as four siblings, Jan (Bill) Lorton of Punta, Gorda, Fla., Joan (Darrell) Schexnider of Lodi, Calif., Linda Adair wife of the late Dan Adair of Monmouth, Ill., and Lyell (Cay) Painter of Colorado Springs, Colo. Further surviving is Terri Churchill of Chillicothe, former wife of Leslie. During high school, he was a four-sport letterman before graduating in 1950 from LaHarpe High School. He was an honorably discharged U.S. Army veteran. Don was employed as a design engineer for Caterpillar Tractor Co. for 38 years before retiring in 1994. He was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses in 1957 and served as an elder at several of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Peoria and then in Lewistown for 20 years. He had many enjoyments in life including camping, traveling, motorcycle riding, water skiing, roller-skating but especially spending time with his family. Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service is scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, 2015, at the Lewistown Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. Visitation will be one hour prior to his service. Burial of his remains will be at a later date at Swan Lake Memory Gardens in Peoria. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Lewistown Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. Peckham Jr., Maurice - Savoy  
PEORIA - Maurice Alan "Jim" Peckham Jr., 86, of Urbana, formerly of Peoria, passed away the morning of Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2015, in his home. He was born in Jacksonville, Ill., on Sept. 19, 1928, the son of Maurice Alan Peckham Sr. and Alma Ethel Kelley. Jim married Barbara Jean Schimenz in Peoria, Ill., on April 16, 1955. She survives, as well as four children, Mark, Matt, Jill and Alan; and five grandchildren, Kate, Daniel, Reece, Ian and Mia. The last of his generation of the family, he was preceded in death by a brother, Gilbert; and two sisters, Margaret and Mildred. Raised in Peoria, Jim was a proud graduate of Peoria High School and Bradley University. He served in Korea as an MP before working for the Hyster Ransomes Company in Peoria, Danville and Ipswich, England. Before retiring, he also worked at the C.S. Johnson Co. in Champaign. A partner with his wife, Barbara, in Peckham & Associates Estate Sales, he worked with her from the beginning, until they finally retired from the business in 2008. Jim was a lover of nature and enjoyed cycling, walking in the woods and traveling the world. He and Barbara entertained their friends frequently, and he was universally known as an affable and distinguished gentleman. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 612 E. Park, Champaign, with Father Joe Hogan officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Urbana. Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. on Tuesday at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for contributions to the Nature Conservancy in Washington, D.C., a group Jim admired and supported for many years. Purifoy, Purdie - Peoria  
PEORIA - Mother Purdie Purifoy, 91, of Peoria, Ill., passed away at 10:35 p.m. Monday, Aug. 31, 2015, at UnityPoint Health-Methodist, with her family at her bedside. Purdie was born June 14, 1924, in Bluff City, Ark., to George and Ruby Ingram. She married Alford Purifoy, and he preceded her in death. She is survived by six daughters, Faye (George) Box, Tonnie (Elliehue) Rutherford and Rebecca Anderson, all of Peoria, Ethel (Russell) Ledbetter and Glenda Stafford of Little Rock, Ark., and Myrplean Smith of Arkadelphia, Ark.; one son, Joe Willie Purifoy of Arkadelphia, Ark.; her brother, Carteen Ingram of Cleveland, Ohio; 21 grandchildren, including two of whom she helped to raise, Willie Joe (Carla) Allen and LaSaundra (Darren) Weeks; 35 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; her daughter-in-law, Martha Purifoy; and her special son and daughter-in-law that she adopted in love, Suffragan Bishop James (Ruby) Ware. Mother Purifoy was also preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Joe Nathan Ingram, Dalton Ingram and Paul "Spare Ribs" Gulley; and son, Billy Joe Purifoy Jr. She was a member of Grace Apostolic Assembly, where funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, 2015, with a visitation beginning at 9 a.m. Suffragan Bishop James Ware will officiate. Pendergrass, Robert - Peoria  
WEST PEORIA - Robert Darie Pendergrass, 81, of West Peoria passed away at 5:55 p.m. Monday, Aug. 31, 2015, at Heddington Oaks, with his family by his side. Robert was born on Jan. 16, 1934, in Harris Station, Tenn., to the late Mack Darie and Myrtle (Moore) Pendergrass. He is survived by three sons, Mark (Susan) Pendergrass of St. Louis, David Pendergrass of Peoria and Matthew (Jacqueline) Pendergrass of Dunlap; four grandchildren, Sarah, Macy, Natalie and Katherine; and his loving companion, Patricia Slocum of Peoria. He was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters. Robert honorably served his country in the United States Air Force. He was a lifelong sales person in the Peoria area. Robert liked fishing, going to any gym anywhere and the many activities his sons were involved in. He was their biggest fan. He also loved choir music and singing. Robert was a man of high integrity and he valued the many relationships he formed through his career in sales and his involvement in Cursillo and church and school activities. His family would like to thank the staff at Heddington Oaks for the wonderful care they provided. A memorial Mass will be at noon today, Sept. 3, 2015, at St. Thomas Catholic Church. Msgr. Jason Gray will officiate. Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. until noon today, prior to the Mass. Cremation rites have been accorded. Wright & Salmon Mortuary is handling the arrangements. Petzel-Cravens, Marguerite - Decatur  
KMOX, WLS musician was 100 PEORIA - Marguerite Eloise Pauline Petzel-Cravens, age 100, of Peoria passed away at 4:05 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28, 2015. Funeral services will be on Friday, Sept. 4, 2015, at 2 p.m. at the Central Christian Church in Decatur, Ill. Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Memorial services will be held at the First Christian Church, 6400 N. University, Peoria, Ill., on Saturday, Sept. 5, 2015, at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Hall Cemetery in Blue Mound, Ill. Memorials may be made to Central Christian Church in Decatur, Ill. Marguerite was born Dec. 28, 1914, in Blue Mound, Ill., the daughter of Herman Randolph and Ada Evelyn (Gemmer) Petzel. She married Howard C. Cravens on June 8, 1952, in Blue Mound, Ill. Marguerite was a 50-year member of Central Christian Church. She was a graduate of Brown's Business College. Marguerite was a musician for KMOX in St. Louis, Mo., and WLS in Chicago and started her music career at WJBL in Decatur in the 1920's. She also worked for Illinois Power for 10 years. Marguerite loved to play the piano and sing. Music was her passion, especially with the High-Low Bi-Low group and the Mothers Singers. She also enjoyed gardening, cooking and sewing. Marguerite was a member of the Decatur Women's Club, Kiwanniannes and volunteered at the Decatur Memorial Hospital. She is survived by her husband, Howard C. Cravens of Peoria, Ill.; daughter, Chere Peters and husband, Steve, of Peoria, Ill.; grandchildren, Julie Peters and Elisa Peters of Peoria, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Gilbert, Curtis and Ralph; and sister, Marie Himstedt. Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home in Decatur is handling the arrangements.
