103, Isabel Unakis Former Kewanee resident was - Peoria  
KEWANEE - Isabel L. Unakis (nee Isabel Srbina and Ljuba Srbjanin), 103, formerly of Kewanee, passed away Sunday, Jan. 31, 2016, at the Avantara Palliative Care Facility in Park Ridge, after a short stay in the Advocate Hospital in Park Ridge for a fractured femur. She was the only child of Stevo and Draginja (nee Radojevich) Radovich Srbjanin Kosutic, Serbian parents. She was born on Jan. 7, 1913, in Hrastavac, Yugoslavia (Croatia), and immigrated to the United States on March 13, 1921, on the ship Colabria. Isabel attended Kewanee schools, graduating from Kewanee Public High School in 1933. After graduation, she attended Normal University for a year and a half and Kewanee Business College, and eventually received her BS degree from Bradley University in Peoria in 1965. She married the late Charles A. Unakis on Jan. 16, 1937, and had one daughter, Yolanda, in 1938. In 1939, Isabel and her parents became naturalized citizens. As a young woman, Isabel wrote for a Serbian newspaper, clerked in an ethnic grocery store and translated for customers who could not speak English. During the war years, she worked at Walworth Manufacturing Company. Later, she became a children's clothes buyer and clerk for J.C. Penney and Montgomery Ward. For a number of years, she worked in the adult department as a librarian in the public library. After finishing her degree in education, she taught sixth grade at Irving Elementary School in Kewanee until she retired at the age of 65. At one time, she was active in the Women's Auxiliary of St. John's Episcopal Church and Rebecca Lodge. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Yolanda (the late Erwin F.) Unakis of Park Ridge; and her granddaughter, Mrs. Mara Evert (John R. Domingue) of Ventress, La. Private burial will take place in Mount Pleasant View Cemetery in Kewanee, Ill.

Blackford, Virginia - Peoria  
PEORIA - Virginia Mae Blackford, 81, of Peoria, Ill., passed away Friday, Jan. 29, 2016, at UnityPoint Health-Proctor. She was born Feb. 27, 1934, in Kenton, Tenn., to Edgar and Rhoda (Edwards) Eddleman. Virginia married Robert Blackford on May 5, 1956. Surviving are her husband, Robert Blackford of Peoria, Ill.; two sons, David (Vickie) Blackford of East Peoria, Ill., and Allan (Francie) Blackford of Springfield, Mo.; and four grandchildren, Kevin, David, Dustin and Jordan. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Jerry Eddleman; and her sister, Darlene Borzello. Raised as a Southern Baptist in Memphis, Tenn., Virginia sang gospel music throughout the South as a teenager. She graduated from Humes High School in 1953, along with her classmate, Elvis Presley. Virginia later gave up a singing career to raise a family here in Peoria, but did still enjoy singing occasionally as "Mrs. B," Central Illinois' "Only Female Elvis Impersonator," on WMBD in the 1990s. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2016, at Davison-Fulton Woodland Chapel. Visitation will be from 12 noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Blakesley, Dorothy - Minier  
MINIER - Dorothy J. Blakesley, 88, of Minier, Ill., died Friday, Jan. 29, 2016, at Aperion Care in Bloomington, Ill. She was born Oct. 5, 1927, in Peoria to Charles E. and Melba Fern Langston Donnan. She married Albert L. Blakesley on Aug. 12, 1950, in Peoria. He preceded her in death on Sept. 18, 1984. Also preceding her in death were one sister, Jean; and one brother, Robert. Dorothy is survived by three nieces, Patricia Murray of Columbus, Miss., Cynthia Klein of Woodridge, Ill., and Deb Peine of Bloomington, Ill.; two nephews, Brad and Craig Peine, both of Minier; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. Dorothy was a secretary in St. Louis for five years. She then began her nursing profession. For over 30 years she cared for patients at St. Francis Hospital in Peoria and at Hopedale Medical Complex. Dorothy was a member of Minier Christian Church. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, 2016, at Haensel Funeral Home in Minier. Visitation will be one hour prior to services. Bloch, Shirley - Germantown Hills  
PEORIA - Shirley Mae Bloch, 91, of Peoria, Ill., passed away at 12:09 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2016, at her home, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Davenport, Iowa, on Jan. 27, 1925, to Arnold and Freda Hagin Stephens. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, William A. Stephens; grandson, Francis David Cummings Jr.; and son-in-law, Edward Dean Copp. Shirley is survived by her husband of 69 years, Eugene O. Bloch; their six children, Stephen (Judy) Bloch of Lafayette, Ind., David (Debbie) Bloch of Bloomington, Cheryle (Reverend Edward) Hudelson of Pontiac, Susan Copp (David) Densberger of Washington, Nancy (Bruce) Parker of Arlington Heights and Peggy (Russell) Farden of Marquette Heights; 21 grandchildren; and many loving great-grandchildren. Shirley served in the Cadet Nurse Corps during World War II and graduated from Moline Public Hospital School of Nursing in 1946. She was a retired registered nurse from Methodist Medical Center in Peoria, Ill. She was a member of the Methodist Retirees group and the American Contract Bridge League. She received an ACBL life master certificate in 2010. She had a passion and love for all types of animals. Cremation rites have been accorded. There will be no visitation or services. The family will receive friends at a celebration of her life open house at a future date.
