EAST PEORIA - Albert Gianessi, age 98, of East Peoria passed away at 11:25 a.m. on Saturday, March 8, 2014, at Rosewood Care Center in East Peoria.
He was born July 14, 1915, in Groveland to Frank and Eurosia (Conducci) Gianessi. He married Genevieve Wajtekajtis on July 3, 1946, in Kenosha, Wis. She passed away April 14, 2013, in East Peoria.
He was also preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.
Survivors include four children, Leonard (Linda) Gianessi of Maryland, Beatrice Kovin of East Peoria, Gregory (Lynne) Gianessi of Glasford and Loretta (Bruce) Winborn of Creve Coeur; and six grandchildren, Robert, Carol, David, Angelo, Martin and Dayton.
As a youth, Albert worked in the coal mines in the Groveland area. He was a United States Army sergeant, serving in World War II from 1941 to 1944. During this time, he received the Bronze Star.
Following World War II, Albert went to work for Caterpillar Inc. There he worked in the Engineering Department for many years, retiring in 1978.
Albert was a member of St. Monica's Catholic Church in East Peoria, a 35-year member of the Knights of Columbus, Disabled American Veterans and Accordion Club and was an avid polka dancer with his wife and friends.
Visitation will be Thursday, March 13, 2014, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Remmert Funeral Home in East Peoria, with additional visitation 30 minutes before Mass at the church. A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Monica's Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in West Peoria, with military honors.
