HAVANA - Barbara A. (Nichols) Maloney, age 82, of Duluth, Minn., formerly of Havana, died Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2013, at her home.
She was born April 3, 1931, in Havana, Ill., to C. Arthur and Mildred (Hall) Nichols. Barbara was a 1949 graduate of Havana High School. On Oct. 26, 1957, she married William D. Maloney.
Barbara was the secretary of the chemical dependency unit at Miller Dwan Hospital in Duluth until 1977, when she became the principal secretary of the College of Letters and Science and later of the College of Science and Engineering at the University of Minnesota in Duluth, retiring in 1992.
Barbara was a convert to the Catholic Church in 1949. She and William were members of St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church until after his death, when she joined St. Michael's Catholic Church.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William D. Maloney, in 2003; and her brother, Edward H. Nichols of Jefferson City, Mo., in 2004.
She is survived by her son, Timothy G. Maloney of Duluth; a sister-in-law, Verna Nichols of Palmetto, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, other relatives and friends.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013, at St. Michael's Catholic Church, 4901 E. Superior St., Duluth, Minn.
