PEORIA - Mrs. Clara H. Johnston, 95, of Vero Beach, Fla., formerly of Peoria, died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013, at The Place at Vero Beach.
Mrs. Johnston was born in Peoria, Ill., and was a graduate of Manuel High School, Class of 1935. On June 30, 1951, she married Garland B. "Oley" Johnston while they were both working for the Peoria & Pekin Union Railway Company. Upon retiring, they moved to Vero Beach 33 years ago.
She was a member of the Vero Beach Elks Lodge No. 1774, where she was known as the "Deviled Egg Lady," Eagles Aerie and the Eastern Star in Peoria and The 600 Bowling Club.
Survivors include her goddaughter, Cheryl Rudd of Vero Beach, and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Garland Johnston; parents, John and Mary Holt; and brothers, Jack and Jim Holt.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, 2013, at the Strunk Funeral Home in Vero Beach. There will be a celebration of her life beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013, at the funeral home, with the Vero Beach Elks Lodge officiating, followed by interment in Crestlawn Cemetery in Vero Beach. After the interment, her celebration will continue with a reception at the Vero Beach Elks Lodge.
