CANTON - Donald Martin "Donnie" Freeman, 71, of Canton passed away at 3:20 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, 2013, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
He was born on Dec. 5, 1941, in Canton to Lela and Leo "Tuffy" Ferrarini and Don D. Freeman.
Surviving Don are his mother, Lela Ferrarini; sisters, Donna Satterlee, Jill (Roger) Dunham and Murlea Ferrarini Long, all of Canton, and Michelle (Don) Lewis of Tupelo, Miss.; and 11 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Leo "Tuffy" Ferrarini; a nephew, Marty Corbitt; and a great-niece, Amanda Ball.
Don served in the U.S. Army from 1962 to 1965, stationed in Washington, D.C. He was a military policeman and was honored to have guarded President Kennedy's grave after his assassination. He met Jackie Kennedy and the president's brothers, Robert and Edward Kennedy. He was honorably discharged and worked at CIPS, retiring after 30+ years.
He also was a member of the Canton VFW and Canton Elks Lodge.
Don was a big Elvis fan and loved sports cars, having two of his cars featured in car magazines over the years.
Cremation rites have been accorded. Honoring Don's wishes, there will be no service, but a celebration of life will be held at a later date.
Don will be greatly missed by his family and his cat "Frankie."
Memorials may be made to the Fulton County Humane Society in Don's name.
Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton is in charge of arrangements.
