Edwin Hanson

PEORIA - Edwin E. Hanson, 87, of Peoria passed away at 2:35 a.m. Saturday, June 15, 2013, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

Edwin was born Jan. 11, 1926, in Urbana Ill., to E. Ruth Handy and Frank P. Hanson. The family moved to Peoria, where Ed attended Sipp School, then Kellar, and Woodruff High School.

At 17, he joined the ROTC Program of the National Guard at Michigan State University, and was sent to active military duty in the Philippines, where he was awarded a Bronze Star for valor under fire.

At the end of World War II, he resumed an education at Purdue University in Indiana, earning a degree in engineering.

He worked at Caterpillar Tractor Company for 35 years in Peoria's Engineering and Research departments.

He married Marilyn Sedgwick in 1947, at First Federated Church in Peoria. She and their four children, Howard P., Alan S., Ruth E. and James E., survive.

Ed was certified as an instructor of SCUBA Diving and became an expert underwater photographer and longtime member of the Peoria Camera Club.

Memorial services will be at 3:30 p.m. Friday, June 21, 2013, at First Federated Church in Peoria. Inurnment will be in the columbarium located at First Federated Church.

Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Midwest Food Bank, 9005 N. Industrial Road, Peoria, IL 61615 in Ed Hanson's memory.
