Fred Achterberg Jr.

PEORIA
- Fred D. Achterberg Jr., 87, of Peoria died at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2013, at Independence Village in Peoria.
He was born Feb. 19, 1926, in Peoria, a son of Frederick D. and Ruth E. Delicath Achterberg. He married Joyce L. Wiesehan on May 27, 1951, in Peoria. She preceded him in death on Feb. 26, 2013, also in Peoria.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents and one infant son.
He is survived by his children, Tom (Beth) Achterberg of Raleigh, N.C., Julie (Ed) Polonus of Peoria and Teri Seei of Peoria; his brother, Ronald (Lilliann) Achterberg of Germantown Hills; his six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was a United States Navy veteran, serving his nation during World War II.
He worked as a carpenter for Achterberg & Sons Builders for many years, starting his career with Val Jobst, and was a 65-year member of Carpenter's Union Local 183 in East Peoria.
The family would like to thank the staff and personnel of the 911 Emergency and first response team who tended to Fred in his hour of need.
Fred was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Peoria, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11, 2013. The Rev. Joe Meyer will officiate. Visitation will be two hours prior to service at church. Burial, with military honors, will be in Swan Lake Memory Gardens in Peoria.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Redeemer Lutheran Church Food Pantry.
