TOULON - Gerald C. (Jerry) Stapel, 84, of Toulon died at 2:20 p.m. Monday, May 6, 2013, at Toulon Rehabilitation & Health Care Center.
Jerry was born May 7, 1928, in Phillips, Wis., the son of Frederick and Charlotte Kasper Stapel. He married Audrey Gerard on March 29, 1954, in Kewanee. She survives.
Also surviving are one son, Jerry J. (Cindy) Stapel of Toulon; three grandchildren, Christopher, Jonathan (Mary), and Bethany Stapel; one great-granddaughter, Anna Bryn Stapel; one brother, Fred Stapel of Galva; one sister, June (Irvin) Lampson of Tacoma, Wash.; and one brother-in-law, Orville King of Toulon.
His parents; three brothers, Edmond, Don, and Willie Stapel; and one sister, Virginia King, preceded him in death.
Jerry graduated from the Illinois School of Banking at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and from the School of Banking at University of Wisconsin at Madison. He started working at State Bank of Toulon as a bookkeeper in 1953 and became assistant cashier in 1958. He was elected to the board of directors and presidency in 1970. He retired from the bank in 1990, but continued as a member of the board of directors until 2000.
He entered the U.S. Army in December 1950. He served with the 7th Infantry Division in Korea during 1951 and 1952. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Stars and the United States Service Medal. Jerry was a member and past president of the Toulon VFW Post 8825 and also a member of the Toulon American Legion Post 416.
Jerry attended the Toulon United Methodist Church.
Jerry was one of the organizers of the Stark County Health Center and Sunshine Village. He was active in the Old Settlers' Association, where he was co-chairman of Toulon's 150th anniversary celebration. He served on the board of Kewanee Hospital and Black Hawk East Foundation. He was past president of Toulon Grade School Board of Education, Toulon Chamber of Commerce, and Toulon Lions Club. Jerry served 17 years as Toulon city clerk and was Treasurer of Stark County Republican Central Committee.
He was especially proud of being initiated into the Black Hawk East Wall of Fame in September of 1998. Jerry also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and also going to the NCAA Final Four Basketball Finals with his son and grandsons for many years.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, May 10, 2013, at Toulon Funeral Home. Rev. Paul Wier will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 9, 2013, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Toulon Cemetery with military honors accorded.
