PEO Sisterhood leader dies at 103

PEORIA - Helen K. Merritt, 103, of Peoria passed away on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013, at Rosewood Care Center in Peoria.

Funeral services for Helen will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 21, 2013, at United Presbyterian Church in Peoria. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. A private graveside service will take place at Swan Lake Memory Gardens, prior to the services.

She was born on Nov. 10, 1909, in Lehigh, Iowa, to Charles and Forrest Owen. She was raised and educated in Galesburg, Ill. She married Marvin L. Merritt on April 5, 1931, in Galesburg.

Helen is survived by two children, Diane M. Martin of Surprise, Ariz., and David (Sharon) Merritt of Peoria, Ill.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband and three sisters, Rhea Belden, Dorothy Beyeart and Barbara Wilds.

Helen had been a resident of Peoria since 1934, and was a member of First United Presbyterian Church since 1935. She was a Deaconess, a member of the Women's Club, Choir Member and a Sunday School teacher at the church.

She was a former Girl Scout leader, den mother for the Boy Scouts, served on the Geyer Home Board and was a member of Proctor Hospital Women's Service Auxiliary.

She was particularly fond of her years as a member of the PEO Sisterhood, Chapter R, which she belonged to since 1950, and served as a president for the chapter.

Memorial donations in honor of Helen may be made to United Presbyterian Church.
