MAPLETON - Herbert J. Aper, 69, of Mapleton passed away at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, 2013, at the Richard L. Owens Hospice Home in Peoria.
He was born Dec. 30, 1943, in Lincoln, Ill., to Julius and Tryphena Aper. He married Eileen Lofthouse in Bartonville on Sept. 6, 2003. She survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Julie (Tom) Miller of Joliet, Ill., and Janelle Aper of Bartonville; three stepsons, John (Tammy) Lofthouse of Peoria, Steven (Teresa) Lofthouse of Washington, Ill., and Michael Lofthouse of Peoria; two sisters, Judy (Leroy) McCray of Lincoln, Ill., and Joyce Slifer of Mode, Ill.; two special granddaughters, Kristin (Jay) Lofthouse-Aquart and Tricia (Andy) Lofthouse-Meister; granddaughter, Stephenny (Adam) Lofthouse-Chavers; two grandsons, Jacob Lofthouse and Zac Lofthouse; great-grandson, Abram Chavers; and special sister-in-law, Susan Stone.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a stepson, Chuck Lofthouse; and a sister, Janice Curry.
Herbert graduated from Lincoln High School and went through the machine apprenticeship at Caterpillar Inc. He was transferred to Dyersberg, Tenn., to help open a new plant, where he met Eileen, his one true love. He retired from Caterpillar as a quality control supervisor after 45 years of service.
He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Bartonville, where he was active in the choir, was president of the Cemetery Board, and served on the church council. He was well-known in the St. Ann Catholic Church family in Peoria, volunteering for many activities there. He considered Father Terry Cassidy and Sister Judith Ann close friends. Herbert was also a member of the Farmington Sportsmen's Club.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013, at St. John Lutheran Church in Bartonville with the Rev. Michael Jones officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Davison-Fulton Bartonville Chapel in Bartonville, with further visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Burial will be at St. John Lutheran Cemetery.
