EUREKA - James William Hawkins, 78, of Eureka, Ill., passed away at 9:10 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014, at Washington Christian Village in Washington, Ill.
He was born on Dec. 1, 1935, in Bear Lake, Mich., a son of Robert and Madge Kennedy Hawkins. He married Betty Ann Rentsch on Feb. 7, 1959, in Metamora, Ill., at the Christian Union Church. She survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Patricia (Barry) Parker and Cynthia (Randy) Kerr, both of Jacksonville, Fla., and Jennifer Hawkins Arnold of Conway, Ark.; five grandchildren, Clay and Elizabeth Norris of Arkansas and Jessica Campbell, Michael Mewhorter II and Kathryn Kerr of Jacksonville, Fla.; four great-grandchildren; his sister-in-law, Donna (Larry Sr.) Barrett of Metamora, Ill.; two brothers, Phillip Hawkins of Oklahoma and David Hawkins of Arkansas; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Michael Hawkins; one grandson, James Ausmus; and one brother, Robert Hawkins.
James had worked in trucking and management and retired after 40 years of service. He was a member of the Teamsters union. He also served in the U.S. Army Reserve in 1958.
James was a family man who enjoyed fishing, hunting and working on cars.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 17, 2014, at Oakwood Cemetery in Metamora, Ill. The Rev. Ron Martz will officiate.
Argo-Ruestman-Harris Funeral Home in Eureka is assisting the family with their arrangements.
