James Perelli

FARMINGTON - James Eugene Perelli Jr., 90, of Farmington, Ill., died Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013.

Jim was born in Farmington, Ill., on April 23, 1923, to James E. Perelli Sr. and Vivian (Bollinger) Perelli. He married Patricia Ann Smith on Jan. 6, 1946, at the Farmington Methodist Church, while on furlough from the U.S. Army Air Corps.

He graduated from Farmington High School in 1941 and attended Knox College in Galesburg, Ill., from 1941 to 1943, when his college ROTC class was sent to basic training. With his musical talents, he auditioned and was chosen for a Glenn Miller's Army Air Corps Jazz/Big Band, which he played in over the next few years. After being discharged from the service, he returned to Farmington, Ill. He attended Western Illinois University and received his bachelor's and master's degrees in Education and School Administration.

For 36 years, Mr. Perelli taught and coached in Farmington schools and then became assistant superintendent in Farmington District Schools.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia of Farmington; and his sister, Jane (Cec) Stinson of Elmhurst, Ill. He also is survived by three daughters, Cynthia (Brad) Kepple of Farmington, Lu Anne (Jerry) Navarra of Morrison, Ill., and Sue (Jim) Dorrans of Park Ridge, Ill.; seven grandchildren, Amy (Will) Darnall of Tampa, Fla., Joel (Sarah) Kepple of Savannah, Ga., Emily Navarra of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, Leslie (Andy) Deters of Comanche, Iowa, Mallory Navarra of Des Plaines, Ill., Bill Dorrans of Arlington Heights, Ill., and Brian Dorrans of Chicago, Ill.; four great-grandchildren, William and Jackson Darnall of Tampa, Fla., and Cade and Nolan Kepple of Savannah, Ga.; one niece, Julie (Gerry) Glander of Orland Park, Ill.; one great-niece, Melanie Glander of Chicago, Ill.; and one great-nephew, Tyler (Mary) Glander of Elkridge, Md.

Jim was an active member of the community and various organizations for his entire life, including Boy Scouts of America, Farmington Methodist Church, Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity, Knox College 50 Year Club, Phi Delta Kappa Education Fraternity of WIU, American Legion member and Taps bugler, Farmington Rotary Club Paul Harris Fellow, Illinois Association of School Administrators, Illinois Elementary School Association, IHSA Coaches Association, Illinois Retired Teachers Association, Fulton County Schoolmasters Association, Spoon River College Advisory Board, Farmington Athletic Booster Club, Farmington Police Commission, CILCO Advisory Board, Oak Ridge Cemetery Board, Canton Country Club, Canton YMCA, 4 Time Baton Twirling National Champion and lifelong diehard Cubs fan.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given to Farmington Central Academic Foundation/James Perelli Scholarship, Farmington Rotary Club Scholarships, Farmington Rescue Squad, Farmington United Methodist Church, Farmington American Legion Baseball or family's memorial choice.

Visitation will be at Anderson-Sedgwick Funeral Home in Farmington on Thursday, Sept. 19, from 4 to 7 p.m. A memorial service will be held Friday, Sept. 20, at 11 a.m. at the Farmington United Methodist Church. The Rev. Jessica Baldyga will officiate. Private burial will be after the memorial service.
