Jean Walker

PEORIA - Jean Cheryl Walker, M.D., 47, of Chicago, formerly of Peoria, passed away peacefully Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013, in the presence of family, friends and staff at Rush Hospital, following a long illness of lupus and kidney failure.

She was born Dec. 25, 1965, in London, England, of Jamaican parentage, to Guandaline Walker and the late Frank Walker.

She immigrated to the United States with her parents and sibling in December of 1971.

Jean lived in Peoria and became a U.S. citizen, along with her family, at the age of 5. She grew up at 1218 N. Sheridan Road in Peoria.

She attended Franklin Elementary School. She also attended Peoria Central High School, graduating in 1983. She played cello in the orchestra and was in the Illinois Youth Symphony Orchestra. She was also in the junior and senior honor roll societies. She was involved in many school sports, including softball, volleyball and swimming.

Jean graduated from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana with a bachelor's degree in nutrition and agricultural science. She studied pre-medicine at the University of Illinois College of Medicine-Rockford, where she obtained her medical degree.

She then entered the obstetrics/gynecology residency program at Rush Medical Center in Chicago in 1998. In 2001, she went into private practice. Jean was a partner at the Comprehensive Center for Women's Medicine, working as a obstetrician and gynecologist for the past several years. She loved her co-workers and patients and enjoyed her time working there.

She loved sports and was an avid fan of the Chicago Bulls, Bears and Blackhawks. Jean also enjoyed playing golf.

She and her mother enjoyed traveling, especially on their many cruises together. She was very much engaged in charities for the underprivileged children of Illinois, especially in Chicago. She was very passionate about working with them.

She is survived by her mother, Guandaline "Gwen" Walker of Peoria; her brother, Dave Walker of Chicago; aunts and uncles in Canada; and many cousins in Toronto, England and Jamaica. She is also survived by her husband, Kevin Sogor of Chicago; many close friends in Peoria and Chicago; and her two beloved dogs, Yukie and Tauro.

Her father, two aunties and two uncles preceded her in death.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, where she grew up and was a confirmed member.
