Lester Cooley

PEORIA - Lester Cooley, Jr., 85, of Eldon, Mo., formerly of Peoria, passed away Monday evening April 29, 2013, at his residence in Eldon, Mo.

On June 29, 1927, he was born in Kansas City, Mo., the son of the late Lester and Betty (Baker) Cooley.

On May 18, 1946, in Hannibal, Mo., he was united in marriage to Cecilia Irene (Elzea) Cooley, who survives at the home.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Michael Schranz of Eldon, Mo.; son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Marcy Cooley of Chillicothe, Ill.; five grandsons, Christopher, David, Patrick, Jason and James; seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

His parents, one sister and one brother preceded him in death.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Eldon, Mo., and the American Legion.

Lester served in the United States Army during World War II and then in the Navy serving on the L.S.T. during the Korean conflict.

He was employed with the Peoria Police Department serving for 23 years before retiring as captain, and in 1976 he received the Police Officer of the Year Award. He was then police chief in Bartonville, Ill., for 10 years.

He then retired and moved to the Lake of the Ozarks, where he enjoyed fishing and boating. Several years later he moved to Eldon, Mo., and served as a volunteer for three years with Camden County Probation and Parole Office.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, May 1, 2013, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Phillips Funeral Home of Eldon, Mo., with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Funeral service will be today, May 2, 2013, at 10 a.m. at Phillips Funeral Home with Monsignor Donald W. Lammers officiating.

Interment will follow at the Eldon City Cemetery with full military honors provided by the Eldon VFW Post 2442 of Eldon, Mo.

Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.
