Loyal Schoonover

CANTON - Loyal "Schoonie" L. Schoon- over, 89, formerly of Canton, passed away at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, 2014, at his son's house in Wee-Ma-Tuk, near Cuba, Ill., where he was residing.

He was born Sept. 17, 1924, in Farmington, Ill., to Jesse and Tilda (Failer) Schoonover. Schoonie married Irene Stammer in Jackson, Minn., on Oct. 17, 1948. She survives.

He is also survived by his two sons, Jeffrey (Ann) Schoonover of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, and Edwin Schoonover of Wee-Ma-Tuk; six grandchildren, Shaun (Kim) Schoonover, Shane Rosencrans, Amanda (Jason) Palmer, Megan Schoonover, Aaron Schoonover and Casey Schoonover; nine great-grandchildren, Alex, Ashleigh, Abbie, Peyton, Evan, Addison, Jake, Deacon and Tiffany; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Schoonie was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Charles Schoonover; and three sisters, Carrie Bohm, Ester Schoedal and Ethel Anderson.

Schoonie was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and served in Guadalcanal. He was honorably discharged in April of 1946. He was an electrician at Buckheart Mine, retiring in 1987, after 41 years.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Canton, the American Legion of Cuba and the VFW of Canton.

Schoonie was always a very active person who loved gardening, playing cards at the retiree's hall and spending time with his family. He was always helping his sons and grandchildren and anyone else who needed a hand. He never knew a stranger.

Services will be at noon Saturday, June 14, 2014, at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton, where visitation will be two hours prior. Burial, with military honors, will be in White Chapel Memory Gardens in Canton.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Canton.
