Nathaniel Judd

WASHINGTON - Nathaniel F. Judd, 89, of Washington, Ill., died at 12:22 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014, at UnityPoint Health-Methodist in Peoria, Ill.

Born on Sept. 17, 1924, in Rover, Mo., to Orville and Alma Haywood Judd, he married Pauline Trantham on March 24, 1946, in Koshkonong, Mo. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Marc (Kathy) Judd of Carlock, Ill., and Eric Johann (Tammie) Judd Sr. of Pekin, Ill.; sister-in-law, Irene Judd of West Plains, Mo.; sister-in-law, Mary Trantham of Nashville, Tenn.; brother-in-law, Carl Trantham of West Plains, Mo.; seven grandchildren, Erica Judd, Isaac Judd, Sara Judd-Downing, Rachel Judd-Janssen, Eric Johann "Bucky" Judd II, Anna Judd-Bikai and Andrew Judd; and two great-grandchildren, Blake and Eliza Bikai.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas; sister, Pauline; son, Nathaniel; and brother-in-law, Lee.

N.F. was a U.S. Army sergeant, serving during World War II with the 106th Infantry Division as a sniper. He was nominated for a Congressional Medal of Honor after leading his platoon at Okinawa and remaining as the only survivor. He was also part of the first group into Tokyo after the bomb was dropped.

After coming home, he worked in District 50 schools, first as a math and science teacher, eventually serving as principal at Sundoer and Beverly Manor Schools.

He enjoyed golf, bowling and woodworking in his spare time. He was an excellent marksman, and loved spending time with his dachshund, Mr. Oscar Meyer. Most importantly, he loved his wife of nearly 68 years and all his family. His grandchildren fondly remember going with grandma and grandpa on RV trips to Branson.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3, 2014, at Deiters Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington, Ill. There will be a funeral service at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014, at Robertson-Drago Funeral Home in West Plains, Mo. Pastor Darrell Meadows will officiate. Additional visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014, at Robertson-Drago Funeral Home. Interment will follow the funeral service at Oak Lawn Cemetery in West Plains, Mo.
