CHILLICOTHE - Robert F. Smith, 84, of Chillicothe passed away on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
He was born Jan. 7, 1928, in Peoria, Ill., the son of Van and Alice (Kitzmiller) Smith. He married Pat Coon on Aug. 15, 1951.
Surviving are his wife; three sisters, Lorraine Giugler and Carmen (Don) Biddison of Chillicothe and Rosemarie Taylor of California; and one brother, Russell (Eleanor) of Chillicothe.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Richard Smith; and one sister, Delores Petty.
Bob moved to Chillicothe in 1929, with his parents, and attended Chillicothe grade and high schools, graduating in 1946.
He worked for the Santa Fe Railroad as a dispatcher until he entered the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He owned and operated the Standard Station on the south end of Chillicothe with his brother, Dick. He later co-owned the Skelly Station and fuel oil business with his father and brother, Dick. He sold his interest in the fuel business and went into the insurance, real estate and appraisal business. He retired in 1994.
Bob bowled on leagues through the years and loved to square dance. He got his pilot license and owned several planes. He and Pat flew all over the country. Bob volunteered for the Chillicothe Community Fire Department, Methodist Hospital and the Chillicothe Township.
Cremation rites will be accorded. There will be no services.
