Roland Hillig

BARTONVILLE - Roland "Rol" Gene Hillig, 85, of Bartonville, Ill., passed away Thursday, April 25, 2013, at 4:30 a.m. at Rosewood Care Center, Peoria, Ill.

The son of Roland and Elsie (Demmin) Hillig, he was born Dec. 27, 1927, in Peoria. He married Joyce Brunner on Dec. 12, 1953. She survives.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Also surviving are his three children, Jana (Wes) Fleming of Pharr, Texas, Joy Rees of Bartonville, and Brad Hillig of Pekin; five grandchildren, Alycia, Tyler, Kelsey, Sarah and Shelby; one brother, Richard (Marilyn) Hillig of Bartonville; and one sister, Marilyn Love of Bartonville.

Rol last worked as a supervisor at Caterpillar Inc. in the grounds and services department in East Peoria. He retired in 1983.

He served in the Army 40th Infantry Division in 1951 and 1952. He was stationed in Japan and Korea, both for nine months.

He was a member of Bartonville American Legion Post 979.

After retirement, Rol enjoyed fishing and golfing. He spent much of his time at his camper in New Boston, on the Mississippi River. During winter months, Rol and his wife, Joyce, would travel to Magic Valley Trailer Park in Weslaco, Texas.

Rol was an avid fan and participant of sports. He graduated from Manual High School in 1946, where he played varsity basketball. His softball team, sponsored by his uncle's business, Al's Radio, won the state championship in 1954. He was also very involved in starting youth baseball in Bartonville and spent many years coaching.

While employed at Caterpillar, he ran the youth baseball and basketball programs for the children of Caterpillar employees, plus many other activities, such as the annual Caterpillar Christmas program. He was a huge St. Louis Cardinals fan, which he passed on to his children and grandchildren.

Services will be private, with burial at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in Bartonville.
