Vila Hofer

PEORIA - Vila R. (Funke) Hofer, 83, of Dubuque Retirement Community, 2700 Matthew John Drive, Dubuque, Iowa, died Thursday, April 18, 2013, at Finley Hospital in Dubuque.

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 22, 2013, at Resurrection Catholic Church, with Father Gary Mayer officiating. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until the time of services at the church. Graveside prayer services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2013, in the chapel at Swan Lake Memory Gardens.

Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, Dubuque, is in charge of arrangements.

She was born on May 9, 1929, in Dyersville, Iowa, daughter of Otto E. and Emma E. (Deutmeyer) Funke. She married Martin J. Fleck. He died on May 20, 1978. She was cherished by Dale D. Hofer, whom she married May 31, 1965, in Peoria. He died on Oct. 7, 2001.

Vila lived in Peoria for 35 years. She moved to Dubuque with her husband in August 1991 to be near their family.

She was a homemaker. She loved her family and enjoyed bowling, flower gardening, swimming, and a good game of euchre with her friends at Dubuque Retirement Community.

Surviving are a son, James M. (Shery A.) Fleck of Dubuque; a grandson, Scott A. Fleck of Denver, Colo.; two granddaughters, Nicole S. (Fleck) Stram and special friend Adam Grant of Rockford, Ill., and Shawna M. Fleck of Dubuque; five great-grandchildren, Kylie Stram, McKinzee Stram, Nolan Grant, Cordell Fleck and Ashton Fleck; a stepdaughter-in-law, Charlotte Allen of Peoria; many stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren from Dale's family; brothers, Le Roy Funke of Dyersville and Dennis (Jean) Funke of Dubuque; a sister, Marilyn (Roger) Mescher of Dyersville; two sisters-in-law, Elaine Funke and Jan Funke, both of Dyersville; and many nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dale D. Hofer; a stepson, Harold Allen; two brothers, Robert Funke and David Funke; a sister and brother-in-law, Robert and Norma Edleman; and a nephew, Dean Funke.

The family requests no flowers. A Vila R. Hofer memorial fund has been established.
