Virgil Morton

PEORIA - Virgil Thomas "Tom" Morton, 67, of New Bern, N.C., formerly of Peoria, passed away Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at home.

Born in Kansas City, Kan., and raised in Peoria, Ill., he received his bachelor's degree from Bradley University and his master's from Illinois State University.

He taught high school and coached football and baseball in Pekin, Ill., for four years before beginning his career in the transportation field.

He worked for several companies and retired from UPS Freight in February 2013.

Mr. Morton loved the Lord, his family, the St. Louis Cardinals and golf.

He was an active member of Centenary United Methodist Church, where he served in the United Methodist Men; and also served as an usher, and he was a member of the Taberna Men's Golf Association.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Georgia Morton.

He is survived by his wife, Polly Morton; two sons, Jeff Morton and wife Crystal of Dallas, Texas, and Greg Morton and wife Sandra of Los Angeles, Calif.; one brother, Don Morton and wife Peggy of Fort Worth, Texas; two sisters, Judy Fisher and husband Ray of Bloomington, Ill., and Joleen Bailey and husband Jim of Peoria, Ill.; four grandchildren, Cameron and Shelby Richmond, Donavin and Destiny Johnson; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 5, 2013, at Centenary United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warriors Fund, or Centenary United Methodist Church.
