PEORIA - Walter "Walkie" Earnest Crooks, 74, of Taylor, Mich., formerly of Peoria, Ill., passed away on Thursday, Sept. 5, 2013.
Walter was born in Peoria on Aug. 13, 1939. He was the second son of Clarence and Ada (Warmick) Crooks Sr.
He is survived by his wife, Florence (Payne) Crooks; daughter, Donnice (Crooks) Woods; granddaughter, Shonna Woods; as well as seven stepchildren, Gilbert Payne, Charles, Gregory, Kenneth and Kevin Golden, Andrea Golden-Pope and Bennie Golden. He is survived by three brothers, Dhafir Shahid "Daniel" of San Francisco, Calif., Roger (Lourdes) Crooks of Panama City, Fla., and Mark Crooks of Peoria; three sisters, Patricia Day of Homewood, Barbara (Cornell) Wright of Bartonville and Candice Crooks of Country Club Hills; and beloved sister-in-law, Fan Crooks.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Atty. Clarence Crooks and Byron Crooks; as well as two sisters, Charlotte Crooks and Frances Hole.
Walkie was an Air Force veteran, serving tours of duties in the Korean and Vietnam conflicts.
He retired from the Evanston, Ill., Post Office.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013, at Howe-Peterson Funeral Home, located at 9800 Telegraph in Taylor, Mich. Graveside services will be held on Monday, Sept. 16, 2013, at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield, Ill. A memorial service is planned for later this month in Peoria, Ill. Simons Mortuary has been entrusted with local arrangements.
