ELMWOOD - William G. "Bill" Smith, 73, of Elmwood passed away at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, March 15, 2014, at his residence.
He was born on June 8, 1940, in Harrisburg, Ill. He married Mary "Eppy" Espey in November of 1963 and later married Ruth Knapp on June 29, 1974, in Peoria. They survive.
Also surviving are three children, Jerry (Valerie) Smith of Chillicothe, Patty (Sean) Halpin of Big Bend, Wis., and Michael (AiLinn) Smith of Phoenix, Ariz.; three stepchildren, Greg Wear of Peoria Heights, Emmy Wear of Williamsfield and Elly (Brian) Fennell of Dunlap; one foster daughter, Kathy Grismore of Bloomington; AFS student, Elisabetta Mazzitelli of Rome, Italy; one sister, Helen (Bill) Summers of Tremont; and 10 grandchildren.
He served as a flight instructor in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1960 to 1970 and was discharged as a staff sergeant. He worked as a teacher, librarian and coach at Woodruff High School from 1978 to 2000.
He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church.
Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 20, 2014, at the Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Elmwood, where visitation will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Joe Meyer with officiate. Cremation rites will be accorded following the service.
