Marvin Roat Obituary

Marvin Roat
HAVANA - Marvin Arthur Roat, 86, of Havana went to be with Jesus on Monday, Nov. 28, 2016, at 1 a.m. He spent his final hours at his home.
He was born in rural Havana on his parent's farm on Nov. 17, 1930.
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Julia (Hendricker) Roat; and six siblings, Alice (Roat) Murphy, Mildred (Roat) Park, Paul Roat, Roy Roat, Bess (Roat) Wade and Gerald Roat.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sue Ann (Chambers) Roat; and his four children, Michael (Melissa) Roat, Lorraine (Randall) Munson, Kenneth (Roxanne) Roat and Steven (Danielle) Roat. He is survived by nine grandchildren, Alexander and Gracelyn of Michael/Melissa, Kenneth Munson and Scarlett (Josh) McBride of Randy/Lorraine, Lydia, Adelyne and Rosemary of Kenneth/Roxanne, and Sarah and Luke of Steven/Danielle. He is survived by two great-grandchildren, Hallie and Ross of Scarlett/Josh. He is survived by four siblings, Charles Roat, John Roat, Dan Roat and Carol (Roat) Reedy.
Marvin was a U.S. Army veteran and saw active combat during the Korean Conflict. He served in the armed forces from Jan. of 1952 through Oct. of 1953. He was a member of a tank crew in the 245th tank battalion in the 45th infantry division.
Aside from his military service, Marvin farmed in the Havana area his entire life. He was one of the very first irrigators in Mason County in the early 1960s. In addition to hogs, corn, soybeans and wheat, he also raised Hartung and Green Giant green beans and Weaver popcorn. He was a drainage commissioner for Havana Township, a member of the American Legion Post #138, a member of Mason County Farm Bureau, and a member of the Central Illinois Irrigated Growers Association.
Marvin attended Havana Church of the Nazarene his entire life. His grandfather, Hendricker, was instrumental in founding the Havana church in 1923. All of Marvin's children have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, which is in large part due to the faithful and principled examples provided to them by Marvin and Sue.
Marvin's family would like to thank the staff at Mason District Hospital and Havana Health Care for their loving and professional care.
Funeral arrangements are being managed by Hurley Funeral Home in Havana. Visitation will be on Friday, Dec. 2, 2016, from 4 to 7 p.m. The funeral will be on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2016, starting at 10:30 a.m. The Rev. Jim Buchanan and the Rev. Randy Munson will officiate. Burial will be at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Havana. Both the visitation and the funeral will be held at the Havana Church of the Nazarene at 328 S. Broadway.
