Alice Walker Obituary

GALESBURG - Alice Adolphson Walker, 88, of Galesburg died Thursday, May 1, 2014, at Seminary Manor.

She was born Oct. 16, 1925, at Cottage Hospital in Galesburg. She was the first child of Emil Gotthard Adolphson and Helen McCulloch Adolphson.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church.

Alice was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold L. "Pug" Adolphson and Emil E. Adolphson, both formerly of Galesburg; and her husband, Robert Walker, formerly of Galesburg.

She is survived by one sister, Rose Anne Saul of Galesburg; and one sister-in-law, Caroline Templeton Adolphson, also of Galesburg. She is also survived by two sons, Mike Walker of St. Paul, Minn., and Mark (and Lori) Walker of Dunlap, Ill.; and two daughters, Mary Kay (and Charles) Baldwin of Antioch, Calif., and Melissa (and Craig) Morgan of Lisle, Ill. She is further survived by seven grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was very well liked and never failed to give her help to someone who needed it. We will miss her.

Alice went to Galesburg schools and graduated from Galesburg High School in 1943 and attended the University of Illinois.

Alice and Robert raised the family in Galesburg and then relocated to Missouri in 1976. There she enrolled in Southwest Missouri State University. She also worked for Head Start in Missouri. She finished her degree in education and taught special education at Cabool, Mo., High School until retirement, when they relocated to Clarksville, Mo.

In July 2011, they came back to Galesburg to Seminary Manor. Every day they ate together at a table for two in the dining room. It was so good for both of them to be together. Then on March 1, 2014, Robert passed away. He had been her companion for 66 years and this loss was hard for her. She kept trying, but began to decline.

Visitation will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 3, 2014, followed by services at 2 p.m. at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Cremation will be accorded.

Memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church in Galesburg.
