PEORIA - Dale W. Boyer, 82, of Peoria passed away peacefully at 12:25 a.m. Thursday, June 27, 2013, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Dale was born on June 17, 1931, in Ottawa to Frank and Iona Boyer. He married his sweetheart and love of his life, Carol Ledgerwood, on Nov. 22, 1952. She survives.
Also surviving are his children, Mary Dale (Jeff) LeRoy of Peoria, Chris Boyer of Pensacola, Fla., Regeana (Butch) Stake of Delavan, Greg (Pat) Boyer of Tremont, Renita (Tom) Mullen of Peoria, Carolyn (Paul) Schiavo of Princeville and Tricia (Dave) Geber of Trivoli; 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and his cat, Jerry.
He was preceded in death by his infant son, Patrick James; brothers, Don, Cecil, Gene, Wayne and Floyd; and an infant sister, Wanda Jane.
He was the "rock" to his seven surviving children that he was most proud of. He taught his children to respect others and have strength and love for family.
He was of the Catholic faith.
Dale was the most giving, hard-working man. He had a heart of gold. His wife and family were the most important pleasure of his life.
At the age of 8, he traveled by bus to Peoria and grew up at Guardian Angel Orphanage. His guiding light was Sister Regina.
He served in the United States Air Force. After the military, he was in every way adopted by Keela and Elmer Mousty.
Dale became a champion boxer in the Peoria area, known as the "Illinois Kid." He worked to support his family at Raber Packing Company and Kroger for 40 years. He was known to area children and their families as the "hot dog man" at Rabers.
He never knew a stranger. He had a great gift of gab. Loved by everyone who knew him. He would help anyone in need. He never complained and accepted whatever life handed him. Dale was very strong in body and mind. He was a fighter and fought hard until the end. There are not enough words to describe what a great man he was. Dale loved spending time with his family and ice cream outings with his love, Carol. He loved gardening and working in the yard, fishing, crossword puzzles and watching God's creatures that visited his backyard. He had many, many stories and "one-liners" that will never be forgotten by anyone who had the pleasure of hearing them. Dale was blessed with many friends to say the least. To him, everyone was "good people."
Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday, July 1, 2013, at St. Thomas Catholic Church. Monsignor William Watson will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, June 30, 2013, at Wright & Salmon Mortuary with recitation of the Rosary at 6:45 p.m. An additional visitation will be 30 minutes prior to the Mass at the church. He will forever be in our hearts.
