Dolores Klein Obituary

WEST PEORIA - Dolores M. Klein, 87, of West Peoria died at 12:55 a.m. on Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at Heartland Health Care in Peoria.

She was born May 30, 1927, in Peoria to Thomas and Hazel Fosbender Gibson. On May 17, 1952, she married Edward Joseph Klein in Peoria, and they spent 62 years together. He survives.

Also surviving are her five children, Tina (Patrick) Puntoni of Heyworth, Paula Klein of Tucson, Ariz., Timothy (Deborah) Klein of Moline, Ill., Evan Klein of Laura, Ill., and Martin (Barbara) Klein of Washington; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three brothers, John (Camille) Gibson, David Gibson and Patrick Gibson, all of Peoria.

She was preceded in death by one infant daughter, Mary Ann Klein; one son, Christopher Klein; three brothers; and one grandson, William Klein.

Dolores worked in the home raising her six children, and she and Ed also took in foster children for many years.

She was very active in women's rights groups all her life and, in 2010, she was inducted into the 2010 Women's National Hall of Fame.

She was past president of National Organization for Women and NAACP, both in the local Peoria chapters. She was also very involved in the "Clothes Line Project," a national movement helping woman heal emotionally from domestic violence.

Dolores was a member of the Universalist Unitarian Church in Peoria.

There will be a celebration of Dolores's life at Avanti's Restaurant, 8517 N. Knoxville Ave., Peoria, IL 61615, on Saturday, June 28, 2014, from 4 to 6 p.m. Cremation rites have been accorded. Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington is handling arrangements.
