Founder of Davis Mortuary

TREMONT - Donald H. Davis Sr., 93, of Tremont, formerly of Hopedale, passed away at 7:15 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012, at Hopedale Nursing Home.

He was born July 16, 1919, in Metamora to the Rev. J. W. and Laura L. Schlabach Davis. He married Violet Mae Bachman on June 22, 1939, in Lowpoint, Ill.

Surviving are his wife of Hopedale; two daughters, Shirley (Joseph) Springer and Debbie (Don) Beard; and one son, Don Jr. (Barbara) Davis, all of Tremont; 10 grandchildren, Jodi, Keri, Shelli, Don III, Tony, Dalana, Joe, Luke, Carly and Nick; 17 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Marilyn Johnson of Elgin, Ill.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Everett Wayne, and an infant brother and sister.

Don grew up in Flanagan and graduated from Metamora High School. He attended Goshen College and then worked for Caterpillar Tractor Co. until he was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served as a medic in the European Theater during World War II.

Upon his discharge from service he graduated from Worsham School of Mortuary Science in 1946. He began his career in funeral service, serving his apprenticeship at the Preston Funeral Home in Pekin before purchasing the Rickett Funeral Home in Hopedale in 1947. In 1950, he founded Davis Mortuary in Tremont. He and his wife owned and operated the two businesses until 1982 when they retired and began spending their winters in the Orlando area. While in Florida, he worked part time for Yoder & Frey Auctioneers, Disney World and the Houston Astros training camp.

Among his greatest joys were his family, being of service to families as he practiced his chosen profession and singing, especially gospel quartet music.

He will be remembered for his deep bass voice and his unique, dry sense of humor. His family will miss him greatly but will be forever grateful to the Lord for the many years we were blessed to have him as a husband, father and grandfather.

He was a member of Hopedale Mennonite Church, where his funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012. Pastors Kurt Walker and Roger Springer will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Davis Mortuary in Tremont and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Mennonite Cemetery in Hopedale.

Memorials may be made to his church.
