Edwin Slagle Obituary

PEORIA - Edwin L. Slagle, 95, of Peoria died Monday evening, Aug. 12, 2013, at the Nursing Center of Lutheran Hillside Village, where he had been a resident with his beloved wife, Maureen, for the last 10 years.

He was born Oct. 27, 1917, in Fort Wayne, Ind., the son of the late Edwin Slagle Sr. and May (Kreibaum) Slagle.

His two sisters, Delores Brown and Mae Rose Tannehill, also predeceased him.

He graduated from Purdue University with a mechanical engineering degree.

He was passionate about mathematics, logical thinking, precision and perfection in all things. He loved a good cigar, a good joke, tennis, the Republican Party, his country and his wife, Maureen.

He worked for U.S. Steel Corp. as a works industrial engineer and as superintendent of wire and wire products at the Pittsburg, Calif., plant. He was the director of motor vehicle safety at the Department of Transportation in Washington, D.C., the vice president of manufacturing at Keystone Consolidated Industries in Peoria, Ill., and CEO of Expert Resources, Inc. He was the dean of engineering at John F. Kennedy University in Martinez, Calif.; the chairman and president of the Contra Costa of California Taxpayers Association; commissioner of the Local Agency Formation Commission of California; a member of Kiwanis; and since moving to Peoria in 1968, a member of Rotary. He was a member of the Country Club of Peoria, Wildlife Prairie Park and Bicycle Safety Town.

He taught management courses at Stanford University in California and Bradley University in Illinois.

He was a past president and fellow of the American Institute of Industrial Engineers, a member of the American Iron and Steel Institute, the Wire Association of Illinois, the Manufacturers Association, the Society of Automotive Engineers, the American Management Association and a professional engineer.

Lieutenant Ed Slagle served in the Army Air Corps as a bomber pilot in a B-29 bomber group in the Pacific Theater in World War II and as a flight instructor. He was decorated with the Distinguished Flying Cross Air Medal. A book was written of his war years, "One Came Back."

He was married to Maureen D. Slagle (Roy) for 60 incredible years. She was the love of his life and he has been by her side through her own long struggle with Parkinson's disease.

Edwin passed away from complications of Alzheimer's. His stepdaughters, Suzanne Sommer and Michele Clark; and stepgrandchildren, Preston Clark and Samantha Sommerwere; were also by his side when he died.

Heartfelt thanks to them for the many years of tender and constant care. The family particularly wishes to thank the nurses, CNAs and administrative and religious staff at Lutheran Nursing Center for their devotion and care of Edwin in the last six years. Also, special thanks to Pattarawadee Pradaxay "April," the family's longtime caregiver, for her gentle and loyal support of Ed and Maureen.

Edwin is also survived by his daughter, Patricia Poindexter (John) of California and Brian Slagle, LCDR Ret. (Sharon) of Washington; four other grandchildren, Jeff and Brian Poindexter, Robert Slagle and Pamela (Scott) Schields; and great-grandchildren.

Cremation has been accorded. Memorial contributions may be made in honor of Edwin to the (www.alz.org) or Lutheran Hillside Village Foundation (www.lssliving.org). A celebration of his life will be held on Sept. 21, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the Waters of Life Chapel at Lutheran Hillside Village at 6901 N. Galena Road, with Pastor Paul Park presiding.
