PEKIN - Gladys Faye Cordes, 91, of Pekin passed away at 1:52 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2013, at Pekin Hospital.
Born Sept. 12, 1922, in Newton, Iowa, to Samuel and Emilena (Hoksbergen) Van Rheenen, she married the Rev. Ralph Richard Henry Cordes on May 28, 1943, in Pella, Iowa. He died Feb. 27, 2010, in Pontiac.
She also was preceded in death by one brother, Marion Van Rheenen, and one nephew, Terry Van Rheenen.
Surviving are two sons, Ronald (Delinda "Dee") Cordes of Gridley and Donald (Debra "Deb") Cordes of Sherwood, Ark.; two granddaughters, Jennifer (Tony) Young of Bloomington and Sara (Judd) Cordes-Swensen of Davenport, Iowa; four great-grandchildren, Chance Young, Jacy Young, Anna Swensen and Jack Swensen; one brother-in-law, Albert Cordes of Forest City, Iowa; and one sister-in-law, Margareta Smidt of Belmond, Iowa. She also leaves a nephew, Steve Van Rheenen.
Gladys loved the Lord and supported her husband in ministry through his more than 60 years as an ordained minister with the Reformed Church in America. Together they served Bethel Reformed Church in Davis, S.D.; First Reformed Church in Sioux Falls, S.D.; Community Reformed Church in Freeport; Hope Reformed Church in George, Iowa; and Second Reformed Church in Pekin.
Gladys had worked with a local mission in central Iowa teaching vacation Bible school. She also did missionary work in McKee, Kent. She was a longtime church organist and pianist.
Gladys formerly taught nine grade levels for three years in New Sharon, Iowa, at their country school. She had been a typist in both New Brunswick and in Pekin.
Gladys was a member of Second Reformed Church in Pekin, where she was also a member of the Friendship Circle.
She also was a longtime Pekin Hospital volunteer.
Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 9, 2013, at Second Reformed Church in Pekin. Pastor Bill Appleyard-Pekich will officiate. Visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin.
A prayer service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013, at Ramsey Reformed Church in Titonka, Iowa, where visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Ramsey Reformed Church Cemetery in Titonka, Iowa.
